PENCE SHOWS TWO SIDES IN WASHINGTON

August 5th, 2008 | by John Good |

Representative Mike Pence from Indiana's 6th District has been leading a charge from the GOP-minority to recall the Congress from its traditional August recess to take a vote on expanding outer-continental shelf oil drilling.  Mr. Pence claims that "Congress shouldn't take a vacation until we vote on lessening our dependence on foreign oil".

I agree that Congress should stay in session, but not to consider drilling in the Artic Natural Wildlife Reserve and other environmentally sensitive areas.  Congress should be working full time to develop an energy policy that encourages and supports development of alternatives to oil, not more dependence on it.  When elected to Congress I will support legislation that encourages the development of oil independence and new industries that will bring "green collar jobs" to the 6th District.  Even if we began drilling and found oil, which is never guaranteed, it would have an impact of only a few cents and that impact would not occur until 2018.   By that time, American workers could be making the American vehicles of the future.  This is one of my top priorities when I am elected this November, creating new jobs from green technologies and affordable renewable energy sources.

I was surprised my opponent has embraced such a bold move as to want Congress in special session, given the 37 times this year he has motioned to adjourn Congress.  It seems like the only thing he does want to talk about is more oil, and that is exactly the opposite direction I think we should take.  I think we should be talking about what we can do to help individual homeowners make their homes more energy efficient and less expensive to heat and cool.  Most important we should be talking to our communities to find out what they need .

That is what I will do, in each of the 19 counties of the 6th District I will hold community meetings to exchange ideas and work together to develop a plan to become oil independent.

Mr. Pence was not willing to help the American people while Congress was in its legislative session, and is still not serious about finding real solutions that will help average Americans cope with skyrocketing energy costs.  We Hoosiers are not interested in grandstanding on an issue that should have been resolved earlier in the legislative session.

These are critical times and we need a Congressman who will step up and find answers not sound bytes. As the next Congressman from the 6th District I will work with the next President to find other solutions that do not require us to further pollute the environment and destroy our great natural resources.

Barry Welsh

Mike Pence - “Congressman NO”

August 2nd, 2008 | by John Good |

Alaskan Republicans may be losing "Senator No", but we need look no further than our own 6th Congressional District to find our own Hoosier version. . . Indiana's 6th Congressional District:

Recent House Votes
Foreclosure Prevention Act - Vote Passed (272-152, 11 Not Voting) The House passed this housing-recovery package. Rep. Mike Pence voted NO……send e-mail or see bio Mike Pence doesn't care if you lose your home or not.

Consumer Energy Supply Act - Vote Failed (268-157, 10 Not Voting) The House failed to attain the two-thirds margin needed to pass this bill to release 10 percent of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Rep. Mike Pence voted NO……send e-mail or see bio Mike Pence doesn't care what you pay at the pump. But he will fight hard for the interests of big oil.

National Highway Bridge Reconstruction and Inspection Act - Vote Passed (367-55, 12 Not Voting) The House passed this bill that would help states and the Federal Highway Administration create a uniform inspection system for bridges and highways. Rep. Mike Pence voted NO……send e-mail or see bio Mike Pence isn't concerned about the safety of our bridges and highways.

In addition, Pence was one of 40 to vote against the GI Bill because the benefits to veterans was "too generous." He voted against the Farm Bill then came back to the district and took credit for the Farm Bill!! He voted against renewing Medicare Benefits. Let's show Mike Pence that we do care about these issues by casting our votes for Barry Welsh!

Barry Welsh visits D.C.

June 9th, 2008 | by John Good |

Barry Welsh will make his first Washington DC trip of this election cycle tomorrow Tuesday 6/10/08).

He'll meet with the DCCC at 11:00 am, with former Congressman Lee Hamilton and Senator Evan Bayh in the afternoon, and finish out the day with dinner at the National Democratic Club at the invitation of one of its members.

Wednesday morning he meets with the majority of the Indiana Congressional Delegation on an individual basis and, in the afternoon, will parley with the Obama campaign. Before flying home later in the evening, Barry will be attending a meet and greet at a local DC pub.

Barry is looking forward to the State Party Convention on June 20-21 and is running as a Statewide At Large Delegate. Barry chose to NOT run as a district delegate, leaving those positions open to others in the spirit of party unity, and in the hopes that we might have more leaders representing our District at NationalConvention in Denver.

The campaign will also be having a district wide golf tournament fundraiser on July 14th in Muncie. Fliers for the event will be available at the State Convention. We look forward to seeing you then and there! What a great time to be a Democrat!

6th District Unites Behind Welsh for Congress

May 7th, 2008 | by John Good |

Tuesday’s Primary Election results prove people in Eastern Indiana
Are ready for a change as they overwhelmingly came out to vote for Barry
Welsh.

Barry Welsh received 94924 votes compared to 43795, which was the total for
current Congressman Mike Pence.   Welsh won handily in all but one of the 19
contested counties across the district, losing that single county by less
than 300 votes.

“I want to thank everyone that voted for us, and ask for your vote again in
November.  We have worked tirelessly since before the 2006 elections and
when we lost that race; we got up the next day and started working toward
victory this November.  That work is paying off as we have great name
recognition and voter trust heading into the 2008 elections.  People are
ready for a change and we are that change.”  Said Welsh upon learning that
all counties had reported results.

Welsh continued, “We traveled the district on Primary Election Day and we
knew that the results were going to be good, but we did not expect this.  I
told Brian Howey, who is a well-respected political journalist at an event
in Anderson a few weeks ago, that we would beat my opponent by a count of 56
percent to 44 percent.   We did not expect almost 70%, but what that shows
is that the Independents and even some of the Republicans understand that my
opponent has done little for this district with a Republican President and a
Republican Congress, and they know that he will do even less with a
Democratic President and a Democratic Congress.  Now we roll up our sleeves
and get to work to make sure those people come back to the polls in November
and we work to bring the change that this district is so desperate for.”

Welsh concluded, “My opponent stood by as thousands upon thousands of jobs
left this district.  People know that I am a fighter and I would have fought
for those jobs and we might have saved some of them.  People also know that
I will fight to bring new jobs to this district and that is one of the
reasons we will win in November.”

Delaware GOP Chair: Muncie voters aren’t important

April 9th, 2008 | by John Good |

In a sense, Muncie is like nearly every other city and town in our state this active primary season. Folks are registering to vote in record numbers. They're excited about their voice being heard. After all, for the first time in 40 years, our primary votes here in the Hoosier state actually carry some weight. People are rightfully excited and are flocking to join the democratic process this year.

For the last four months, the media has reported on the record number of new voter registrations, the huge interest in participation, and the large turnouts in every primary in every state this season. So states such as Indiana, and cities such as Muncie, have had ample time to prepare for this influx. Most states and municipalities have done an outstanding job of this, preparing extra ballots, adding staff as necessary, whatever it takes. That's where Muncie becomes nearly unlike everyone else - GOP members of the Delaware County’s Election Boardregistrations filed on time, will not count because there are too many of them and they are short staffed. This is nothing short of voter disenfranchisement and must not be accepted!

The Election Board office there is staffed by three Democratic appointees and two appointees of the Republican Party, which has declined to fill a third vacant position since 2006. Delaware County GOP Chair Kaye Whitehead stated that there "hadn’t been a need for another worker until the office was flooded with applications on Monday, the final day to register to vote in the May primary". Perhaps if Whitehead had found the time to pick up a newspaper, watch tv news, or surf the web over the last few months, she would have realized that some action was needed on her part.

But, then again, all of these record voter registrations and voter turnouts have been created by, and of benefit to, the Democratic contenders for president. So Whitehead has no reason to grease the wheels on the machine that she is partially in charge of. After all, by doing the right thing and serving the taxpayers of Delaware County, she only makes her own job more difficult come November. Despite the demographics of the area, Muncie is a college town. And college students have been voting for Barack Obama in a big way this election cycle. I can understand Whitehead's fear of allowing these youths to add their voice to the choir. But she has a greater responsibility to the populace that outweighs her partisan views. It's nothing short of a disgrace that she would attempt to deny their votes for the sake of her political party.

Phil Nichols, a Democratic member and president of Delaware County’s Election Board, has called for an an emergency meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Delaware County Building to discuss how to handle the flood of voter registration applications. Ball State students will be in attendance as well as 6th District Congressional Candidate Barry Welsh. If you are a BSU student or local citizen, I strongly encourage you to attend this event and make your voice heard.

Happy President’s Day!!!

rushmore_presidents_day.jpg

Ya know, I've been wearing flip flops for years, and I'm getting real tired of their denigration in the political sphere. Boycott Flip Flop Flaming!!!

USA Today: Clinton Campaign Accuses Obama Of 'Flip-Flop'
Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign hammered rival Barack Obama on Sunday for refusing to reaffirm his commitment to accept public financing in the general election, a development a top aide criticized as "a pretty big flip-flop" and an opening for Republican attack.

Bill Clinton Clashes With Obama Supporter   Bill Clinton campaigned across Ohio yesterday, a key state that holds its primary on March 4. A "First Read" piece on the MSNBC website reports Sen. Barack Obama supporter Robert Holeman attended one of the events, where he chanted Obama's name and shouted during the former president's speech.

NY Times: For McCain, a Choice on a Role for Bush
Senator John McCain's campaign advisers will ask the White House to deploy President Bush for major Republican fund-raising, but they do not want the president to appear too often at his side, top aides to Mr. McCain said Sunday.

USDA Orders Massive Beef Recall   The AP reports the US Department of Agriculture "ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs."

Intel Officials Outline Strategy To Fight Radical Islam   The Washington Post reports, "Two US intelligence officials, in public appearances last week, outlined plans to join the ideological fight against radical Islam, much as the CIA worked behind the scenes during the Cold War in the battle against the creed of world communism."

Washington Post: Kennedy's Endorsement of Obama Had Family Roots
There's more to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama than meets the eye. Apparently, part of the reason the liberal lion from Massachusetts embraced Obama (Ill.) was a perceived slight at the Kennedy family's civil rights legacy by the other Democratic front-runner, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).

Jay Leno:   "Actually, both Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards officially dropped out of the race today. I love how candidates have to make it official when they drop out. Like we have no idea they lost."

David Letterman:   "Let me ask you something, ladies and gentlemen. Do you like celebrity birthdays? Who doesn't? Vice President Dick Cheney" is "67 years old today," and friends "got together and threw a big party for him. And then Cheney tortured the cake."
